Can an apple wake you up better in the morning than coffee?
Can’t get through the day without that delicious cup of joe to wake you up in the morning. That is how most people feel about their coffee; they are disoriented, tired and cranky until they finally get that first sip of that perfect golden-brown brew.
However, it might interest you to know that is not the most efficient way to start your day. Research has shown that a single apple can wake up you better than any cup of coffee. This is because just one apple is rich in fructose, the predominant sugar found in fruit, containing 20 grams of sugars. This sugar takes more time than regular sugar to be metabolised into glucose, making it a great energy source because it does not spike your blood sugar or insulin too quickly. While eating one apple won’t make you want to run a mile at 6AM in the morning, it will supply glucose to your brain and muscles for at least an hour or so while the soluble fibre will keep your hunger down until you’re ready to eat a full breakfast.
Now, on the other hand, a cup of coffee will actually wake you up faster than an apple will. The chemical compounds will boost your brain into fully awake mode much quicker than eating an apple. However, this is really nothing more than temporary state because coffee is not actually giving your body energy. A regular cup of coffee usually only contains two calories and no sugars, but if you add sugar, milk and/or creamer, those calories will give you energy but not as much as an apple. Caffeine can also have some unpleasant side effects which include raising your blood pressure, increasing your heart rate and even speeds your breathing.
